Swiss Genealogical Resources on the Internet

The web is wonderful, amorphous, and hard to grasp. Its impact on genealogy has already been large in quantity although rather less so in quality. At any one moment you may find a number of useful, fascinating sites, yet short weeks later several of them may have moved, changed addresses, or ceased operating.

The easiest way to see what is current is to go to one (or more) of the standard search engines such as Google or Alltheweb and type in Switzerland+genealogy or Swiss+genealogy. Try the listings in CyndisList.com if you want to be overwhelmed in terms of numbers of listings. In any event you will find a host of sites which will be of varying degrees of help to you.

You will find a small number of sites which are hosted in Switzerland (addresses ending in .ch), most of which belong to one of the Swiss genealogical or historical societies. These sites are always worth checking: their local knowledge is hard to duplicate anywhere else.

Because the web is in a constant state of flux there is no point in trying to list here those sites which, as of today, offer you the best and most current information on Switzerland. Even some of the better Swiss society sites, for instance, currently list Familiannamenbach and Bibliography of Swiss Genealogies as Out of Print, apparently not being aware that Picton Press published American editions of both several years ago, and has CD-Rom versions of both of them for immediate sale today.
